چکیده

The aggressive spatial spectrum reuse (SSR) by network densification using smaller cells has successfully driven the wireless communication industry onward in the past decades. In our future journey toward ultra-dense networks (UDNs), a fundamental question needs to be answered. Is there a limit to SSR? In other words, when we deploy thousands or millions of small cell base stations (BSs) per square kilometer, is activating all BSs on the same time/frequency resource the best strategy? In this paper, we present theoretical analyses to answer such question. In particular, we find that both the signal and interference powers become bounded in practical UDNs with a non-zero BSto-UE antenna height difference and a finite UE density, which leads to a constant capacity scaling law. As a result, there exists an optimal SSR density that can maximize the network capacity. Hence, the limit to SSR should be considered in the operation of future UDNs.

Preserving Reliability to Heterogeneous Ultra-Dense Distributed Networks in Unlicensed Spectrum

This article investigates the prominent dilemma between capacity and reliability in heterogeneous ultra-dense distributed networks, and advocates a new measure of effective capacity to quantify the maximum sustainable data rate of a link while preserving the quality-of-service (QoS) of the link in such networks. Recent breakthroughs are brought forth in developing the theory of the effective ca...

Hierarchical Cooperation Achieves Optimal Capacity Scaling in Ad Hoc Networks

n source and destination pairs randomly located in an area want to communicate with each other. Signals transmitted from one user to another at distance r apart are subject to a power loss of r as well as a random phase. We identify the scaling laws of the information theoretic capacity of the network. In the case of dense networks, where the area is fixed and the density of nodes increasing, w...

On Coordinating Ultra-Dense Wireless Access Networks: Optimization Modeling, Algorithms and Insights

Network densification along with universal resources reuse is expected to play a key role in the realization of 5G radio access as an enabler for delivering most of the anticipated network capacity improvements. On the one hand, neither the expected additional spectrum allocation nor the forthcoming novel air-interface processing techniques will be sufficient for sustaining the anticipated expo...

On the Fundamental Characteristics of Ultra-Dense Small Cell Networks

In order to cope with the forecasted 1000× increase in wireless capacity demands by 2030, network operators will aggressively densify their network infrastructure to reuse the spectrum as much as possible. However, it is important to realise that these new ultra-dense small cell networks are fundamentally different from the traditional macrocell or sparse small cell networks, and thus ultra-den...

FttC-Based Fronthaul for 5G Dense/Ultra-Dense Access Network: Performance and Costs in Realistic Scenarios

One distinctive feature of the next 5G systems is the presence of a dense/ultra-dense wireless access network with a large number of access points (or nodes) at short distances from each other. Dense/ultra-dense access networks allow for providing very high transmission capacity to terminals. However, the deployment of dense/ultra-dense networks is slowed down by the cost of the fiber-based inf...
